Gene Autry, America’s Favorite Singing Cowboy

Gene Autry achieved fame as America’s Favorite Singing Cowboy, but he was so much more than that. He was the first and only entertainer to earn five stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for recording, radio, motion picture, television, and live performance.

Gene Autry was a patriot, celebrity, visionary, and everyday hero who helped shape and influence our culture.

GENE AUTRY
South Of The Border: Songs Of Old Mexico

In the late 1930s both film studios and record companies were becoming aware of the growing Latin audience in the United States. Singing cowboy star Gene Autry was one of the first to make films that appealed to this ever-growing audience, with Latin themes in his films and music.

In addition to his movies that bore the titles of songs like “Mexicali Rose,” “South of the Border,” and “Rancho Grande,” Gene performed songs of old Mexico on his popular national weekly radio program.

This first-ever collection of Spanish songs by Gene Autry is taken from his popular musical westerns and his weekly Gene Autry Melody Ranch radio show.
